Tour # A-24 - BLACK HISTORY OF THE NORTH COUNTRY & THE TALKING QUILTS
One of the more secretive trails of the Underground Railroad in New York State traversed the Adirondacks, leaving in its
wake some historic people, places and sites throughout the region. Feel the history!

LAKE GEORGE
* Solomon Northup
. Wrote "12 Years a Slave" which was considered a pivotal instrument or turning point to the
Civil War. A free black man was sold into slavery - this is his story. Visit his home and where he worked.

LAKE PLACID
* John Brown.
A fierce fighter for the freedom of slaves, his final days were spent on his farm (and burial ground)
at this Historic Site, making his last stand in Harpers Ferry with his 2 sons and 10 Lake Placid people. An incredibly moving visit to his farm and cemetery.
VERGENNES
* Rowland T. Robinson.
Just on the other side of the New York border, in Vermont, sits the most documented underground railroad site in America. A Rhode Island Quaker, Robinson and his family created a safe haven of a
job, salary, home, education, and fresh air for all slaves coming his way. Visit the farm for an astounding piece of
history. Visit the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum with the remains of the original ferry crossing Lake Champlain
used by fleeing slaves (powered by horses!), church where Frederick Douglas made one of his fiery speeches.

All 3 men were friends and worked together to accomplish their goal - freedom for slaves. Tour includes Message
Givers such as the 10 Talking Quilts, the stone chair, road signs, tree plantings, and so much. This is an absolutely
heart-wrenching and heart-warming tour of our American history.
